The Wiltern's exquisite décor transports guests to a time of sophistication and style that is utterly absent from today's contemporary venues. The art deco entrance is set back amidst vibrant terrazzo paving and features brilliant paintings and ornamental tile work. With each ray symbolizing a different art deco building, the sunburst on the auditorium ceiling is the most striking feature of the entire design. The location provides the ideal atmosphere and layout for a range of events.
October 7, 1931 was the first day that the Wiltern Theatre was open to moviegoers. Under the leadership of Bill Graham Presents, this Art Deco Landmark—which the City of Los Angeles has designated as a Historic Cultural Monument—was rebuilt and brought back to its full splendor in 1985. After a storied past of shows and festivities, a $1.5 million renovation resulted in the Grand Re-Opening on October 15, 2002. The theater, which was formerly all-seated, had its 1,200 orchestra seats removed and was replaced with a five-tiered floor that slopes upward from the stage to allow for standing room only. There are still 1,000 seats available on the balcony, and with the new, flexible arrangement, seats may be moved inside for smaller-scale events.
There were 2,344 seats at the Wiltern Theatre at first. In 2002, the ground floor's 1,200 permanent seats were removed to make way for a multitude of configurations, including a 2,300-person standing room only capacity and a more intimate 1850-person seated arrangement. There are still fixed theater seats available at the balcony's mezzanine level and loge. It is still one of Los Angeles' biggest theaters.
Approximately 2,300 people can fit within the facility, depending on how the floor is configured. The Wiltern and LG Electronics, a well-known international consumer electronics manufacturer, commemorated the theater's rebranding in October 2003. This venue partnership, currently known as The Wiltern LG, will give concertgoers a chance to learn more about LG Electronics' innovative, well-designed array of digital devices. AOL's City Guide describes the Wiltern as one of "LA's coolest venues to check out performers of any type of music," having just undergone a makeover that elevated it from a fantastic place to see more subdued bands.
