The Artist in the Ambulance is Thrice’s third effort. Released in July 2003, the record became the band’s phenomenal breakthrough, entering the Billboard 200 chart and peaking at number 16. Moreover, the album topped Billboard’s Top Internet Albums chart and peaked at number 9 on the U.K. Rock Chart. The album was the band’s defining moment at the height of the post-hardcore era. The albums has an eclectic mix of progressive, hard rock, and heavy metal. Some hints of hardcore punk can also be detected in tracks like “Paper Tigers.” With critically-acclaimed tracks like “Stare at the Sun,” “All That’s Left,” and “Under a Killing Moon,” The Artist in the Ambulance was met with high regard and included in various “best of” lists.
Thrice’s other career-defining records include the 2007 and 2008 efforts of The Alchemy Index Vols. I & II, III & IV, 2016’s To be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere, and 2018’s Palms. All these albums topped Billboard’s Independent Albums chart and performed moderately well on the Billboard 200. In 2021, Thrice’s latest album, Horizons/East, was released with lead singles “Scavengers,” “Robot Soft Exorcism,” and “Summer Set Fire to the Rain.”
