During their prime, Unwound made waves in the punk scene with their unique brand of “noise rock.” The band, which formed in 1991 enjoyed stellar success until they disbanded in 2002. The post-hardcore group, composed of Justin Trosper, Vern Rumseh, and Sara Lund at the time, became a flagship band of the independent punk music label Kill Rock Stars. The band has released seven highly-acclaimed studio albums. They released their significantly influential debut album, Fake Train, in 1993. The album has been said to hold an important place in ‘90s punk, and critics regarded the music as “something that transcends time, place, and attitude.” The album was later reissued with the Rat-Conspiracy box-set in 2014.
In 1995, Unwound released their eponymous fourth album, which many fans and critics considered one of their best works. The album was planned to be their debut release in 1992 but was shelved and released three years later. It was later reissued in 2013 with the Kid Is Gone vinyl box set. In 2001, the band released their last studio album, Leaves Turn Inside You. The seventh album was the last Unwound project to feature bassist and founding member Vern Rumseh before his untimely death in 2002. The band decided to call it quits and not continue the band.
Twenty years passed, and the surviving members decided to revive the ‘90s punk icon. During an interview, drummer Sara Lund said, “When we put Unwound on the shelf in 2002, we never thought we’d return to the project.” Guitarist Justin Trosper added, "Starting over again is a rebellious act against our failure.”
